Forged RPG Data: Stats, Items, Talents, Loot and Quests in JSON for Godot 4
Forged RPG Data keeps an RPG's numbers in JSON files and checks them when the game starts. Stats, classes, abilities, talents, items, item tiers, loot tables and quests all live in data, and a character calculator turns them into total stats, ability numbers and tooltip text. The browser demo above has a character sheet and a loot simulator running on the example data.
A typo in your data shows up as soon as the game starts, with the file and the path to the problem:
items.json → iron_sword → stats: unknown stat 'strenght' talents.json → Knight → wide_swing → mods: unknown ability number 'cleave.raduis'
What you get:
- Loading and checks for eight data files. You define your own stats, equipment slots and rarities.
- A character calculator: total stats from class, level, gear and talents; equip rules; talent points, tiers and requirements; ability numbers after talents; tooltip lines for abilities and items; XP and levelling; saving.
- Ability text with real numbers filled in: "hits every enemy within 3.5 m for 42 (10 + 75% Attack Damage) damage".
- A quest log with progress, turn-ins, quest chains and saving.
- Loot rolls with a seedable random number generator.
- A command-line validator for CI.
- 110 tests, and full GDScript source.
It works with Forged Hotbar and Forged Unit Frames (tooltip lines drop straight into their tooltips) but doesn't need them.
What it doesn't do: combat, damage rolls, crits, inventories and UI are left to your game. The kit works out the numbers.
Made and tested with Godot 4.7.
The code, the frame art and this text were made with AI help.
Licence: use it in any number of personal or commercial games. You can't resell it as an asset. The fonts are SIL OFL.
